How to dispose of Aerosol Cans in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania rules
Pennsylvania DEP directs residents to local household hazardous waste programs for leftover hazardous products. Take partly full cans, especially spray paint, solvents, and pesticides, to a county or municipal HHW event or drop-off. Pennsylvania DEP keeps a county-by-county list of programs. Call ahead to confirm what is accepted, residency rules, and any fees. Some Pennsylvania communities also offer curbside pickup for household hazardous waste. Empty cans that no longer spray may be recyclable where your local program accepts metal cans. Never puncture or burn a can that still holds pressure.
General steps
- Use up the product completely until the can is empty.
- Do NOT puncture or crush the can — it's pressurized.
- Empty aerosol cans can go in curbside recycling in most areas.
- Cans with remaining product are considered hazardous waste.
- Bring partially full cans to your local household hazardous waste facility.
