How to dispose of Appliance Cords & Power Cables

Steps

  1. Unplug detachable cords. Do not cut hardwired cables or dismantle an appliance; have a qualified person isolate wiring and ask the recycler whether cords should remain attached.
  2. Bundle cords together with a zip tie or rubber band.
  3. Take to a scrap metal recycler — copper wire has value.
  4. Best Buy and Staples accept cables and cords for free recycling.

Copper wiring inside cords is valuable and highly recyclable. Scrap yards may pay for large quantities.
