How to dispose of Carpet & Rugs

Steps

  1. Check if your area has a carpet recycling program — over 5 billion pounds go to landfills yearly.
  2. Contact Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) for recycling locations near you.
  3. If in good condition, donate area rugs to thrift stores or shelters.
  4. Cut carpet into manageable rolls (4-foot sections) for bulky trash pickup.
  5. Schedule bulky item pickup with your waste hauler if recycling isn't available.

Carpet fibers (nylon, polyester, polypropylene) can be recycled into new carpet, automotive parts, and plastic lumber.

Area rugs in good condition can be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStores or local shelters.
