NYC DSNY accepts fire extinguishers at SAFE disposal events.

General steps

1. Check if the fire extinguisher is fully discharged or still pressurized.
2. Pressurized extinguishers must go to a hazardous waste facility — never put in trash.
3. Some fire departments accept old extinguishers for disposal.
4. Fully discharged steel extinguishers may be accepted by scrap metal recyclers.
