How to dispose of Light Bulbs in California
California rules
All fluorescent bulbs and CFLs must be recycled. Free drop-off at retailers.
General steps
- Identify the bulb type: incandescent, CFL, LED, or fluorescent tube.
- Incandescent bulbs: Can go in regular trash (wrap in paper to prevent breakage).
- LED bulbs: Recyclable at some drop-off locations, or can go in regular trash.
- CFL bulbs: Contain mercury — must be recycled. Take to Home Depot, Lowe's, or IKEA.
- Fluorescent tubes: Hazardous waste. Take to a recycling center or hardware store.
