How to dispose of Mattress

Steps

  1. Check if your mattress is in good, usable condition (no stains, tears, or infestations).
  2. If usable: Donate to Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, or local shelters.
  3. If not donatable: Check for mattress recycling programs in your area.
  4. As a last resort: Schedule bulky item pickup with your waste hauler or take to the landfill.
  5. Several states have mattress stewardship programs; check local collection rules rather than assuming every resident must recycle.

Mattresses are over 80% recyclable — steel springs, foam, fabric, and wood can all be recovered.

Many charities accept gently used mattresses. Some offer free pickup.
