How to dispose of Medications & Prescriptions in Washington

Washington rules

Secure Medicine Return program offers free disposal at participating pharmacies.

General steps

  1. Never flush medications down the toilet (except FDA-approved flush list).
  2. Use a DEA-authorized drug take-back program or collection site.
  3. Many pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart) have medication disposal kiosks.
  4. If take-back is not readily available, follow FDA instructions: flush only medicines on its flush list; mix most other medicines, without crushing, with undesirable material in a sealed trash container as directed.
  5. Remove personal info from prescription labels before disposal.
