How to dispose of Needles & Sharps in California
California rules
Use California’s approved sharps stewardship collection options and confirm eligibility. SB 486 concerns manufacturers’ disposal-support plans, not a blanket duty for every pharmacy to accept filled containers.
General steps
- Place used needles, syringes, and lancets in an FDA-cleared sharps container immediately after use.
- If an FDA-cleared container is unavailable, follow FDA guidance for a heavy-duty, leak-resistant plastic alternative with a tight puncture-resistant lid, labeled 'SHARPS', only where local rules allow.
- Never throw loose needles in regular trash, recycling, or flush down the toilet.
- When container is ¾ full, seal it and take to a sharps drop-off location or mail-back program.
- Confirm a dedicated sharps collection site accepts filled containers. Pharmacy medication kiosks often exclude sharps.
