How to dispose of Yard Waste (Leaves, Branches, Grass) in California
California rules
SB 1383 requires organic waste (including yard waste) to be composted, not landfilled.
General steps
- Use your municipality's green waste bin or yard waste bags for curbside collection.
- Compost leaves, grass clippings, and small branches at home if possible.
- Bundle branches and limbs with twine (usually 4-foot max length, 50-pound max weight).
- Never bag yard waste in plastic bags unless your hauler specifically allows it.
- Check for seasonal leaf collection programs — many cities offer free curbside pickup in fall.
