How to dispose of Yard Waste (Leaves, Branches, Grass) in New Jersey

New Jersey rules

Yard waste banned from landfills statewide. Must use curbside collection or composting.

General steps

  1. Use your municipality's green waste bin or yard waste bags for curbside collection.
  2. Compost leaves, grass clippings, and small branches at home if possible.
  3. Bundle branches and limbs with twine (usually 4-foot max length, 50-pound max weight).
  4. Never bag yard waste in plastic bags unless your hauler specifically allows it.
  5. Check for seasonal leaf collection programs — many cities offer free curbside pickup in fall.
