Typical lifespan: 5–12 years (about 12 years).
Maintenance schedule
- Check pressure gauge (should be in green zone) — Monthly
- Inspect for damage or corrosion — Every 6 months
- Inspect using the manufacturer’s instructions; do not shake unless directed — Monthly
- Arrange professional extinguisher inspection — Per manufacturer & applicable rules
- Have a qualified service company determine testing or replacement — Model/type-specific schedule
Signs it needs replacing
- Pressure gauge in red zone
- Damaged hose or nozzle
- Corroded or dented cylinder
- Missing pin or tamper seal
- Extinguisher has been discharged (even partially)
Tips
Choose an extinguisher suited to the hazard and follow its instructions. Attempt only a small, contained fire with a clear escape route; evacuate and call emergency services if it spreads or you are unsure. Any discharge requires replacement or professional recharge before reuse. Never use water on a grease or energized electrical fire.
