Weather Stripping: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 3–7 years (about 5 years).
Maintenance schedule
- Inspect all exterior doors for gaps — Twice a year (spring & fall)
- Check windows for drafts — Annually (fall)
- Clean surfaces before reapplying adhesive strips — As needed
- Test with dollar bill test (close door on bill — if it slides freely, replace) — Annually
Signs it needs replacing
- Visible gaps when door is closed
- Drafts felt around doors or windows
- Weather stripping is cracked, flattened, or peeling
- Daylight visible around door frame
- Increased heating/cooling bills
- Insects or dust entering around sealed areas
Tips
V-strip (tension seal) lasts longest for doors. Foam tape is cheapest but wears out fastest.
