Window Screens: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 10–20 years (about 15 years).
Maintenance schedule
- Remove and rinse with hose — Annually (spring)
- Inspect mesh for tears or holes — Every 6 months
- Check frame corners for separation — Annually
- Replace spline if loose — As needed
Signs it needs replacing
- Multiple tears or holes in mesh
- Frame bent or warped beyond repair
- Corners separating
- Screen won't stay in window track
- Mesh stretched and sagging
- Oxidation or corrosion on aluminum frames
Tips
Fiberglass mesh is cheapest; aluminum is more durable; pet-resistant screen handles claws.
