Brake Calipers: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 75,000–100,000 miles.
Maintenance schedule
- Inspect calipers for leaks — With every brake service
- Have slide mechanisms and boots serviced using the specified procedure/lubricant — At brake service, where fitted
Signs it needs replacing
- Vehicle pulls to one side
- Uneven brake pad wear
- Leaking brake fluid at caliper
- Caliper sticking or seizing
Tips
Ask about approved rebuild or remanufactured options and core returns. Electronic parking-brake calipers may need a special service mode; never force components or put lubricant on friction surfaces.
