Brake Fluid: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 2–3 years.
Maintenance schedule
- Check reservoir level and investigate any drop or leak — Per owner's manual
- Have fluid replaced with the specified type and correct bleeding procedure — Per vehicle service schedule
Signs it needs replacing
- Service interval reached or professional testing indicates fluid deterioration
- Contamination requiring professional hydraulic-system assessment
- Soft or sinking pedal — stop driving safely and seek diagnosis
- Fluid loss or leakage — urgent inspection, not just a top-up
Tips
Common glycol-based brake fluids absorb moisture. Follow your vehicle's interval and fluid specification; color alone is not a reliable service test and fluid replacement alone does not fix a soft pedal.
