Brake Pads: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 25,000–65,000 miles.
Maintenance schedule
- Have inner and outer pads inspected, not only the visible outside pad — At service & tire rotations
- Measure friction material against the vehicle's service limit — Per manual or with symptoms
Signs it needs replacing
- Squealing or grinding noise when braking
- Brake pedal vibration
- Vehicle pulls to one side when braking
- Brake warning light illuminated
- Longer stopping distances
Tips
Use pads specified for your vehicle and service both sides of an axle together. Material type alone does not guarantee longer life; correct installation and the manufacturer's bedding-in procedure matter.
