Brake Rotors: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 50,000–70,000 miles.
Maintenance schedule
- Measure rotor thickness — With every brake pad change
- Diagnose runout, thickness variation, cracks and surface damage — With vibration or brake service
Signs it needs replacing
- Pulsation or vibration when braking
- Visible grooves or scoring on surface
- Rotor below minimum thickness
- Blue discoloration from overheating
Tips
Follow the manufacturer's axle-service procedure. Resurfacing is only appropriate when permitted and the finished rotor meets the applicable thickness specification.
