Engine Coolant / Antifreeze: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 30,000 miles or 2–3 years.
Maintenance schedule
- Check coolant level — Monthly
- Test coolant concentration — Annually
- Flush and replace coolant — Every 30,000 miles or 3 years
Signs it needs replacing
- Coolant appears rusty or has particles
- Engine running hot
- Sweet smell from engine bay
- Low coolant warning light
- Coolant leaks under vehicle
Tips
Never open a radiator or pressurized coolant cap when the engine is hot. Use the exact coolant specification in the owner’s manual; color alone does not identify compatibility. Keep coolant away from children and pets and collect spills safely.
