Muffler: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 5–10 years.
Maintenance schedule
- Visual inspection for rust or holes — Every 6 months
- Listen for exhaust leaks — Ongoing
Signs it needs replacing
- Loud rumbling or roaring exhaust
- Visible rust or holes
- Decreased fuel efficiency
- Exhaust smell inside cabin (dangerous)
Tips
Carbon monoxide is odorless: absence of exhaust smell does not prove safety. Stop using a vehicle with suspected exhaust intrusion and arrange inspection. If headache, dizziness or nausea occurs, get everyone into fresh air and seek emergency help. Never run the engine in an enclosed garage.
