Tires: lifespan, maintenance and replacement
Typical lifespan: 25,000–50,000 miles.
Maintenance schedule
- Check tire pressure — Monthly
- Rotate tires — Every 5,000–7,500 miles
- Measure tread depth with a gauge across the tire — Monthly
- Wheel alignment check — Annually
Signs it needs replacing
- Tread depth at or below 2/32 inch
- Visible cords or steel belts
- Uneven wear patterns
- Cracks in sidewall
- Vibration at highway speeds
- Tires reaching the vehicle or tire manufacturer’s age limit, even if tread remains
Tips
Check the DOT date code and the manufacturer’s inspection/replacement age guidance; no universal six-year limit fits every tire. Use the door-placard pressure measured cold, not the sidewall maximum. Wet traction decreases before the 2/32-inch wear limit; damage or exposed cords means stop using the tire.
