How to dispose of Antifreeze & Coolant in Ohio

Ohio rules

Ohio EPA notes that auto service centers and auto parts stores may accept used antifreeze from residents, along with used oil and transmission fluid. Call first, since policies vary by store. If none near you does, contact your county solid waste management district about household hazardous waste collections. Never pour antifreeze on the ground, into a storm drain, or into the trash. It is toxic and its sweet taste attracts pets and children. Keep it in a sealed, labeled container and don't mix it with oil or other fluids.

General steps

  1. Never pour antifreeze down drains or on the ground — it's toxic to animals and children.
  2. Collect used antifreeze in a sealed, labeled container.
  3. Take to an auto parts store — many accept used antifreeze for free (AutoZone, O'Reilly).
  4. Check your local hazardous waste facility for antifreeze recycling.
  5. Used antifreeze can be professionally recycled and reconditioned for reuse.
