How to dispose of Carpet & Rugs in California
California rules
California has a carpet stewardship program updated by AB 863. Check CalRecycle and CARE for current collection options and acceptance; do not assume every location accepts every carpet.
General steps
- Check if your area has a carpet recycling program — over 5 billion pounds go to landfills yearly.
- Contact Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) for recycling locations near you.
- If in good condition, donate area rugs to thrift stores or shelters.
- Cut carpet into manageable rolls (4-foot sections) for bulky trash pickup.
- Schedule bulky item pickup with your waste hauler if recycling isn't available.
