How to dispose of Old Gasoline & Fuel in California

California rules

Contact your local household hazardous waste program about fuel acceptance and safe transport. Never pour fuel into drains or onto soil; dumping can lead to criminal penalties.

General steps

  1. Never pour gasoline down drains, on the ground, or into storm sewers.
  2. Store in an approved fuel container with a tight-fitting lid.
  3. Do not assume old or contaminated fuel becomes usable by dilution. Ask a qualified mechanic or the engine manufacturer; otherwise arrange accepted hazardous-waste collection.
  4. Large amounts must be taken to a household hazardous waste facility.
  5. Contact your local fire department if you're unsure about safe transport.
