How to dispose of Paint (Latex & Oil-Based) in California
California rules
PaintCare program accepts latex and oil-based paint at drop-off locations statewide. Visit paintcare.org.
General steps
- Determine if it's latex (water-based) or oil-based paint.
- Latex paint: Use accepted paint recycling where available. Dry it for household trash only if your local waste agency explicitly allows this; never trash liquid paint.
- Oil-based paint: Never pour down drains. Take to a hazardous waste facility.
- If usable, donate to community organizations, theaters, or Habitat for Humanity ReStores.
