How to dispose of Propane Tanks & Cylinders in Florida
Florida rules
Propane tanks are handled through county household hazardous waste programs, not curbside pickup. Hillsborough County's HHW collections accept propane and helium tanks (limit five tanks of 30 lb or less), and Lake County accepts 20 lb tanks at its HHW center with no annual limit. Most other Florida counties run similar free HHW drop-offs for residents. For 20 lb grill tanks, a tank-exchange cage or a propane dealer take-back is often faster than a facility trip. Never put a propane cylinder in curbside trash or recycling — leftover gas can ignite in trucks and at sorting facilities.
General steps
- Never put propane tanks in regular trash or recycling bins.
- Small camping-style tanks: Check if your hazardous waste facility accepts them.
- Standard BBQ tanks (20 lb): Exchange at retail locations (Blue Rhino, AmeriGas) or refill.
- Larger tanks: Contact a propane dealer for proper pickup and recycling.
- Ensure tanks are completely empty before bringing to disposal.
