How to dispose of Propane Tanks & Cylinders in Ohio

Ohio rules

Ohio EPA says never to recycle or throw away a propane cylinder unless it is empty. Even then, a cylinder can go to metal scrap or the trash only after a professional removes the valve and a hole clearly shows it is empty. Don't try this yourself. If you might refill the cylinder, take it to a knowledgeable gas cylinder retailer or recycler. For 20 lb grill tanks, a tank-exchange cage or propane dealer take-back is usually easiest. Your county solid waste management district can tell you whether its household hazardous waste events accept small camping cylinders.

General steps

  1. Never put propane tanks in regular trash or recycling bins.
  2. Small camping-style tanks: Check if your hazardous waste facility accepts them.
  3. Standard BBQ tanks (20 lb): Exchange at retail locations (Blue Rhino, AmeriGas) or refill.
  4. Larger tanks: Contact a propane dealer for proper pickup and recycling.
  5. Ensure tanks are completely empty before bringing to disposal.
