Florida disposal guide
- Paint (Latex & Oil-Based): Most counties offer free household hazardous waste collection days.
- Tires: Check county waste management for tire collection events.
- Propane Tanks & Cylinders: Propane tanks are handled through county household hazardous waste programs, not curbside pickup. Hillsborough County's HHW collections accept propane and helium tanks (limit five tanks of 30 lb or less), and Lake County accepts 20 lb tanks at its HHW center with no annual limit. Most other Florida counties run similar free HHW drop-offs for residents. For 20 lb grill tanks, a tank-exchange cage or a propane dealer take-back is often faster than a facility trip. Never put a propane cylinder in curbside trash or recycling — leftover gas can ignite in trucks and at sorting facilities.
- Aerosol Cans: Every Florida county runs a household hazardous waste program, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. These can be permanent drop-off sites, scheduled collection events, or in a few places curbside pickup. Take partly full aerosol cans, especially paint, solvent, and pesticide sprays, to your county program. Your county or city website lists what is accepted and when. Empty cans may be recyclable curbside where your local program accepts metal cans.
- Pesticides & Herbicides: Most counties hold annual or biannual hazardous waste collection days.
- Pool Chemicals: County hazardous waste facilities accept pool chemicals year-round.
- Old Gasoline & Fuel: County hazardous waste facilities accept old gasoline year-round.
- Oil Filters: Check with your county for oil filter recycling locations.
- Yard Waste (Leaves, Branches, Grass): Most counties offer free yard waste collection. Check your waste hauler's schedule.
- Concrete, Brick & Asphalt: C&D recycling facilities available throughout the state.
- Swimming Pool Covers: Schedule bulky item pickup through your waste hauler for large pool covers.
