Ohio disposal guide
- Propane Tanks & Cylinders: Ohio EPA says never to recycle or throw away a propane cylinder unless it is empty. Even then, a cylinder can go to metal scrap or the trash only after a professional removes the valve and a hole clearly shows it is empty. Don't try this yourself. If you might refill the cylinder, take it to a knowledgeable gas cylinder retailer or recycler. For 20 lb grill tanks, a tank-exchange cage or propane dealer take-back is usually easiest. Your county solid waste management district can tell you whether its household hazardous waste events accept small camping cylinders.
- Aerosol Cans: Ohio EPA says never to recycle or throw away an aerosol can unless it is empty. Many local recycling programs accept empty cans. If the product is non-toxic, spray what is left into a box or onto trash outdoors, away from flames, children, and pets. Protect your eyes and skin and don't breathe the vapor. Let the box dry outside before putting it and the empty can in the trash or recycling, since vapors can build up in a closed bin. Take partly full cans of paint, solvent, or pesticide to your solid waste management district's household hazardous waste collection.
- Antifreeze & Coolant: Ohio EPA notes that auto service centers and auto parts stores may accept used antifreeze from residents, along with used oil and transmission fluid. Call first, since policies vary by store. If none near you does, contact your county solid waste management district about household hazardous waste collections. Never pour antifreeze on the ground, into a storm drain, or into the trash. It is toxic and its sweet taste attracts pets and children. Keep it in a sealed, labeled container and don't mix it with oil or other fluids.
