Pennsylvania disposal guide
- Propane Tanks & Cylinders: Pennsylvania DEP says propane tanks should be recycled properly, not thrown in the trash. First check whether your local household hazardous waste (HHW) program accepts single-use cylinders or refillable grill tanks. DEP keeps a county-by-county list of HHW programs and events. If it doesn't, look for a nearby propane tank recycler and confirm it accepts your cylinder type. Tank-exchange cages and propane dealers will take refillable 20 lb grill tanks. Call ahead, since many programs limit residents and some charge small fees.
- Aerosol Cans: Pennsylvania DEP directs residents to local household hazardous waste programs for leftover hazardous products. Take partly full cans, especially spray paint, solvents, and pesticides, to a county or municipal HHW event or drop-off. Pennsylvania DEP keeps a county-by-county list of programs. Call ahead to confirm what is accepted, residency rules, and any fees. Some Pennsylvania communities also offer curbside pickup for household hazardous waste. Empty cans that no longer spray may be recyclable where your local program accepts metal cans. Never puncture or burn a can that still holds pressure.
- Antifreeze & Coolant: Take used antifreeze to a household hazardous waste event or drop-off in Pennsylvania. DEP keeps a county-by-county list of programs. Some auto repair shops also recycle coolant from customers. Call first. Most HHW programs have residency requirements, and some require registration or charge a small fee. Never pour antifreeze down drains, onto the ground, or into a storm sewer. It is toxic, and its sweet taste attracts pets and children. Store it sealed and labeled, unmixed with other fluids.
